Sunny San Diego? Not so much for top-ranked women’s tennis player Iga Swiatek at the start of the San Diego Open WTA 500 semifinals.
Swiatek advanced to the final at 4 p.m. today in the bid for her eighth title of the year against either unseeded Danielle Collins, of St. Petersburg, Fla., or qualifier Donna Vekic, who met in the second semifinal that delayed at the start and two other times due to rain stretching into the third set.Based on seedings, the first semifinal represented the de facto championship match.
“My level dropped a little bit, and we raised hers a little bit,” Pegula said. “I don’t think it was that much of a difference, but it was enough.” Pegula, whose parents own the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, took their only other encounter in 2019 on her way to winning in Washington, D.C., for her lone tour title.
