No. 1 player beats qualifier Donna Vekic 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 in final
On one side stood the world’s top-ranked player, Iga Swiatek, and on the other, a tourney qualifier, Donna Vekic. Prospects called for a mismatch in the final of the inaugural San Diego Open WTA 500.Swiatek prevailed 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 before a sellout crowd of 2,376 at the Barnes Tennis Center on Sunday for her eighth title of the year, including the French and U.S. Open championships.“It was a really hard match,” said Swiatek, 21, of Poland, who earned $116,340 plus 500 points in the WTA rankings.
Earlier in the day, Vekic recorded a comeback victory in the completion of her semifinal match suspended due to rain the previous night. Given a opening-round bye in the 32-player field, Swiatek played four tourney matches. On the other hand, Vekic vied in seven over eight days, including two in qualifying.
A similar reaction to playing a month after the U.S. Open was expressed by Coco Gauff, 18, an Atlanta native, now from Delray Beach, Fla. She lost in the quarterfinals to Swiatek 6-0, 6-3 on Friday night in a rematch of the French Open final. Vekic overcame a 4-2 third-set deficit for a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 semifinal victory over unseeded Danielle Collins, of St. Petersburg, Fla., ranked 19th. The match spanned 3:01 over the two days, including 32 minutes in the Sunday segment.
