Lashawn J. McNeil, accused of killing an NYPD cop and wounding another on Friday night, has been arrested in three states.

New York Police Department officer Jason Rivera, who was killed in a shooting Friday, Jan. 21, 2022, is seen in an undated photo released by the NYPD, inset against an image of officers at the scene. A second officer was critically wounded as the two answered a call about an argument between a woman and her adult son, officials said. The suspect was identified as a former Allentown man.

The man police say shot them, 47-year-old Lashawn J. McNeil, also was shot — in the head and arm by police — and was hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said. Essig said he was charged with assaulting a police officer in Pennsylvania in 2002, though no record of any conviction on that charge could be found in state court records. NYPD spokeswoman Det. Sophia Mason said the department could not provide any additional information about the charge, including where in Pennsylvania it occurred.

Police say McNeil was armed with a .45-caliber Glock pistol and a magazine containing 40 hollow point bullets when they arrived at the apartment on 135th Street on Friday night. The gun had been reported stolen in Baltimore in 2017, police said. “I remember one day when I witnessed my brother being stopped and frisked. I asked myself, why are we being pulled over if we are in a taxi?” he wrote. “My perspective on police and the way they police really bothered me.”
