Second-year quarterback Maalik Murphy stepped out from the shadows cast by Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning last weekend with a dazzling performance in Texas' Orange-White spring game.
One sizzling performance, in a scrimmage setting, in April, doesn’t erase all the questions. But the 6-foot-5, 235-pound Murphy demonstrated just why coaches have been so high on him since he arrived as a four-star early enrollee who’d just led Junipero Serra to a California Interscholastic Federation state title.
Murphy looked poised in the pocket and confident in the playbook while alternating drives as Orange team quarterback with ballyhooed true freshman Arch Manning, the top-ranked player in the class of 2023. But Sarkisian should also feel awfully good about the progression of Murphy, who will serve as Ewers’ backup with Manning as the emergency third option.
“I would say he’s a lot more comfortable than he was last year,” Ewers said of Murphy. “We came at the same time and a year in this system really helps you out. I’ve seen him make strides in his knowledge of the playbooks and his knowledge of the defenses. I’m excited for his future. He’s in a great spot right now.”
