The Infinity Residence costs $2000 a night as part of the Manly Pacific’s $30 million revamp.
When I received an invitation to be the first guest in what is now Manly’s most expensive hotel suite, I could almost hear the seagulls screeching and taste the fish and chips. The $2000-a-night Infinity Residence is on the second floor of the reimagined Manly Pacific Sydney, which has just emerged from a $30 million refresh.
All that was needed to prompt a traipse down memory lane was an excuse to go to Manly for a few days. And now I had one, even if was for December 27 and 28, which is usually for sleeping off Christmas. I’m of sufficient vintage to remember when this property first opened as the Manly Pacific International Hotel in December 1982 – the plaque unveiled by then NSW Labor premier Neville Wran. The large, resort-style hotel was considered the height of opulence, and almost a folly as it was so unusual to have an international hotel in the suburbs.
On the corner of Raglan Street and North Steyne Road, the site was previously home to the quaint Hotel Pacific . It was sold to brothers Andrew and Tony Kalajzich, who built the present hotel with developers Larry Radovan and Noel Lobb at a reported cost of $17 million. The Kalajzich brothers sold the hotel in 1987, and it was named the Manly Pacific Parkroyal, after which it became a Novotel.
It all strikes the right note – especially the concierge desk where “beach butlers” are on duty to run over more towels, umbrellas or anything else required by VIP guests lounging on the beach, less than 30 metres out front. The surfboard is a replica of the one used by Midget Farrelly when he won the first-ever World Surfing Championship at Manly 59 years ago. . Each room keycard is stamped with the hotel’s motto “Follow the Sun”.
