Somehow the grand ambitions of Wayne Swan’s 2008 budget, the first Labor budget after years in the political wilderness, seemed to haunt Jim Chalmers on Tuesday night.

Chalmers lived through those times – both the GFC and the savage Coalition attacks on Labor’s various spending plans before and after the crisis began. What the budget also delivers is a shift in the politics of the past 15 years which have been dominated by relentless Coalition attacks on Labor’s economic and fiscal record as a result of the budget blow out in the GFC.
The political dividend to Labor is that the budget weakens – though one suspects does not end – the Coalition’s line of attack on its economic management.

‘Biggest budget turnaround on record’: Chalmers to deliver first surplus in 15 yearsTreasurer Jim Chalmers says the upcoming federal budget is responsible and “sets Australia up for the future”. “It’s carefully calibrated to address cost of living pressures in our communities, rather than add to them,” Mr Chalmers said during a media conference on Tuesday. “In dollar terms, it will show the biggest budget turnaround on record as a consequence of our responsible economic management. “We are now forecasting a surplus this year, smaller deficits after that, and less debt throughout the budget. “If this eventuates, this will be the first budget surplus in 15 years.”
