Collingwood have apologised to Lance Franklin and the Sydney Swans for the booing of the champion at the Magpies-Sydney game at the MCG on Sunday.
“We apologise to the Sydney Swans and to Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin,” the trio said in a statement.“Yesterday was the first time we played the Swans at the MCG in a decade – it provided an opportunity to respect a champion of the game and we fell short.
Goodes retired at the end of 2015 after being booed by supporters of multiple clubs during his final seasons. The AFL later apologised for the treatment of Goodes, acknowledging there was a racial element and that the league and its clubs were too slow to act.AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan also decried the booing of Franklin, saying that an icon of the game should be lauded and, while fans should be passionate, “excessive booing” was unacceptable.
McLachlan also said young star Jason Horne-Francis, the former No.1 draft pick who walked out on North Melbourne after one season and has been jeered by opposition fans regularly this season, also deserved respect from crowds. The Magpies, who are on top of the ladder after eight rounds and a succession of pulsating finishes, thanked their supporters but called for them to respect opponents.
