Players including Ballon d’Or Alexia Putellas and UEFA Player of the Year Aitana Bonmati will continue to boycott the national team until more structural changes are made at federation level.
Spain’s World Cup-winning players will continue to refuse to play for the women’s national team, the country’s soccer federation said on Friday, just hours before new coach Montse Tome was set to announce her first squad.
Aitana Bonmati, widely tipped to be this year’s Ballon d’Or, is among the Spanish players boycotting the national team. The 23 striking players include current Ballon d’Or Alexia Putellas and UEFA Player of the Year Aitana Bonmati, along with dozens of others playing at the elite level across Europe and farther afield.
The kiss was the latest in a series of acts from within the federation and its hierarchy that the players deemed unacceptable. Rubiales’ refusal to step down in the days after the kiss only inflamed the situation as the players called for reforms and new leadership. At a preliminary court hearing on Friday, the prosecutor requested a restraining order against Rubiales so that he cannot go within 500 metres of Hermoso.
