Australia's southern states are at 'continued risk' of blackouts this winter, with a new AEMO report revealing Victoria's falling gas production is a key part of the problem. Yet Premier Daniel Andrews refuses to authorise new supplies.
The AEMO report found that while overall gas production was expected to be “adequate” up until 2027, there could be shortfalls during periods of high demand – such as during extreme weather conditions.

Despite this, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has refused to authorise new exploration, instead calling on the federal government to wind back exports from Queensland’s three major gas giants. AEMO warns of looming gas shortagesAustralian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has warned of a looming gas shortage. The energy regulator released new forecasts which warn the demand for gas on the east coast is likely to outstrip the supply, which could happen as early as this winter, particularly on extremely cold days. AEMO also has its sights on big Queensland LNG exporters – it warns the government may be forced to step in and scrap export contracts within the next three years to ensure Australia has enough gas to keep the lights on.

Most other countries can’t reach net zero ‘without’ nuclear energyShadow Climate Change and Energy Minister Ted O’Brien says most of his party’s partners can’t reach net zero emissions “without” using nuclear energy. “We’re certainly determined to assess the possibility of nuclear energy as much as we can,” he told Sky News Australia. “A part of the lessons I’m learning is all going into a process with my colleagues looking at the possibilities of a policy that will include nuclear energy. “But we haven’t drawn any conclusions yet, ultimately, we know the importance of a clean energy future to Australia – what we’ve learnt from overseas is that most of our partners are saying they can’t get to net zero without nuclear energy.”

Renewable wind and solar energy ‘breaks communities apart’The industrialisation of hills and paddocks for renewable wind and solar energy is “damaging” for the environment and “breaks communities apart”, says Menzies Research Centre Director Nick Cater. His comments come as NSW election polling in regional areas have revealed more than 50 per cent of voters in those seats won’t vote for a party pushing for net-zero carbon emissions – while 5 gigawatts of offshore wind farm are set to be built off Victoria’s coast. “These communities are feeling the push from renewables,” Mr Cater told Sky News host Peta Credlin. “This vast industrialisation of the hillsides and paddocks where they put up wind and solar is really, really damaging. “They can see this and let’s not go down the path of offshore wind – it’s very expensive, we don’t even have any costings on it yet.
