The best result would be that the Yes case can use the next six weeks to convince Australians that the Voice will advance the cause of Indigenous Australians.
will start concentrating the minds of many Australian voters on a cause that’s become more troubled than when Prime Minister Anthony Albanese raised hopes in unveiling the wording of the proposed constitutional amendment at the Garma Festival 13 months ago. The government now has an expected six-week campaign until referendum day – expected to be October 14 – to save the Yes case, which has been steadily losing support across opinion polls throughout the year.
That might turn out to be the case on the day, especially with the extensive funding of the Yes cause and the institutional supporters, from big business through to academia, cultural and sporting bodies, that have lined up behind it. But elite and celebrity feel-good support is no guarantee of success, as shown by the defeat of Australia’s republic referendum in 1999, the UK Brexit vote in mid-2016 and the election of political huckster Donald Trump in late 2016.
The final report of the Referendum Commission in 2017 says that the Voice should not be a veto, or a limit on parliament, and advise only on matters which particularly affect Indigenous people.
