SIBU: A 25-year old labourer has been arrested for rioting and violating the recovery movement control order (MCO) at the central market here on Saturday (Oct 10).

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said at about 11.45am on Oct 10, a security guard manning one of the five entrances to the market reprimanded two men for jumping queue at the registration counter to enter the premises.

"The two men, who are believed to have been under the influence of alcohol, were not wearing face masks, did not write down their particulars on the log book and failed to have their temperature scanned," he said.A quarrel ensued and one of the suspects hit the guard on his head. "One of the suspects held him tight while the other man hit him from behind. When the suspect tried to run away, he was arrested by members of the public," he said. The police are now hunting for the second suspect, identified as Richard Janting, 39, a labourer, from Rumah Silai, Skrang Scheme in Sri Aman.

The case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting and under Regulation 10 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Regulations 2020.
