A key Queensland government advisory group has found kids under 14 contribute less than 1 per cent of all offences statewide – most often property related.
A key government advisory body has joined growing calls for a shift to dealing with young offenders outside the criminal justice system – with a report showing kids under 14 contribute less than 1 per cent of all offences in Queensland, the majority property related.
This differs to NSW and Australia-wide, where breaching bail conditions, bullying harassment and intimidation, and acts intended to cause injury, were the most prevalent offence, analysis of 17-years worth of state sentencing data showed. Queensland’s major parties are on a bipartisan “race to the bottom” which will only heap more pressure on at-capacity detention facilities, experts and advocates have warned.John Robertson, the former Childrens Court president and now-chair of the Queensland Sentencing Advisory Council, which carried out the report, said research showed children who came into the criminal justice system at a young age were more likely to reoffend.
“If the minimum age of criminal responsibility is raised, the low numbers in this cohort suggest it should be feasible to develop alternative responses to properly support these young children and give them the best opportunity to stop offending,” he said. “However, we do acknowledge that this must be balanced with the fact that a very small proportion of this cohort are committing very serious offences.”
