A Board of Supervisors meeting grew unusually tense after San Francisco Mayor London Breed issued a series of personal attacks against District 5 Supervisor Dean Preston.

SFGATE reached out to both Preston and the mayor's office following the contentious meeting. Breed's office sent a statement to SFGATE on Wednesday touting what they’ve deemed a hybrid approach of public health intervention and law enforcement as a means of preventing overdose deaths.

"In San Francisco, we lead with services but we can do all of this work while also doing the important work to make our neighborhoods safer and healthier for everyone," the statement said."Targeting open-air drug markets requires a continued focus on the dealers who are selling fentanyl and other illegal drugs on our streets, but it also requires a more direct intervention with those using drugs who pose a threat to themselves and others.

During a Wednesday morning phone call with SFGATE, Preston vehemently pushed back against many of Breed’s claims from the Board of Supervisors meeting. "Our offices have been in regular communication. She doesn’t attend any of those meetings, so I don’t know how aware she is of all those. The idea that our office has refused to engage and sit down with her on this is absolutely ludicrous,” Preston said. “... I want to make this clear: We work collaboratively with the mayor’s administration all the time. We are meeting with department heads, staff, her legislative liaison before every board meeting.

"If she doesn't like the messenger for that, then that's her prerogative to object to that," he said."But it doesn't change the fact that she's enabling and carrying out policies that are disproportionately going to harm the most marginalized members of our city."
