The new process, approved Tuesday, allows supervisors to make local grants without facing full board approval or public comment.
San Diego County supervisors will no longer approve community grants at public meetings, after the board ended its practice of voting on the local awards., which he said would make the funding process more efficient. The four board members unanimously voted to approve the new policy Tuesday.
The former provides funds for “community, social, environmental, educational, cultural or recreational needs,” while the latter uses hotel taxes to “stimulate tourism, promote the economy, create jobs and improve the quality of life for San Diego residents,” according to the board letter. “They would look at the grant to make sure it meets muster, that we are doing everything appropriately,” Anderson said.
Under the Los Angeles County program, supervisors direct money without full board approval — but the grants must still be approved by county authorities, including the chief executive office, and are listed on the county website quarterly.
