Several ancient artefacts, including a 2,500-year-old vase, housed in the Australian National University's Classics Museum are found to have been stolen from Italy and will be repatriated.

A specialist art squad in Italy's police force first raised the matter last year when it discovered a link between the ANU's prize ancient Mediterranean amphora and the activities of a notorious dealer in the Italian illegal antiquities trade. Following the discovery, the Carabinieri asked to see all documentation relating to the museum's artefacts.

"Which we now know was smuggled out of Italy by another well-known dealer of illicit items, David Holland Swingler," Dr Pike-Rowney said. Dr Georgia Pike-Rowney says the museum doesn't know how the Roman marble head that was stolen from the Vatican ended up in an Australian collection.
