An Attic black-figure amphora dating back to 530BCE and two other treasures will be returned to Italy after ANU’s Classics Museum found they had been plundered.

Three ancient artefacts that found their way into a museum collection in Canberra will be repatriated to Italy after being identified as being criminally trafficked around 50 years ago.are on public display and have been used for research and teaching of several generations of students.

On one side the Greek hero Herakles is depicted killing a mythological lion. On the other side, two warriors are in combat, a slain soldier at their feet and male attendant figures to either side.Known as the Johnson Vase, it had been purchased by the university from Sotheby’s London in 1984 for £7000 and now has an estimated value of $200,000.

Now a third piece, identified by the ANU Classics Museum, a Roman marble head, has been connected to a collection owned by the Vatican and will now be investigated.
