A local angler who encountered the seal off the Mackay coast says it was 'the weirdest and strangest thing' he has ever seen.

abc.net.au/news/long-nosed-fur-seal-spotted-near-mackay-in-north-queensland/102905866When angler Kai Barba took his boat out off the coast of Mackay in North Queensland, the last thing he was expecting to see was a seal.

The species is generally found along Australia's southern coastlines, with sightings further north than Montague Island, on the Far South Coast of New South Wales, uncommon. While the department has not relocated the seal at this stage, wildlife officers were called in to assist the animal when it got stuck on some rocks.

"We went out there … and had a report of the little fella … wedged up in some rocks around Hay Point," Ms Burns said."We managed to get him out of those rocks and he made his way back down to the water."Ms Burns said the plan for now was to keep an eye on the coastal visitor, to ensure he enjoyed his holiday to the Sunshine State.

"It is a watch for him [as] it isn't his natural area … if he looks like he needs our assistance, we'll be out there again," she said.

Queensland suffers record high petrol prices with no end in sightQueensland suffers record high petrol prices with no end in sightPetrol prices in Southeast Queensland have increased significantly, with some drivers having to pay a record 237.9c per litre. Experts are telling motorists there’s no point waiting to fill up with prices unlikely to drop anytime soon. The previous record of 229.9c per litre set in August last year was smashed by almost 10 cents on Tuesday with 21 per cent of petrol stations passing on that price hike in Brisbane. The petrol prices for unleaded in the Gold Coast aren’t as high, sitting at roughly 211.9c per litre. The Deputy Opposition Leader Susan Ley has slammed the Federal government saying household budgets are being squeezed at every possible angle under Anthony Albanese's leadership. “I seem to remember Anthony Albanese saying that petrol prices were far too high under a Coalition government; I think they’re about 30 to 50 cents higher now,” Ms Ley told Sky News Australia. “It is just one of the ingredients of cost of living that this government needs to focus on and all they seem to be focusing on is their project on the Voice.”
