While at SDCC2023, Screen Rant spoke to GuardiansoftheGalaxyVol3 production designer Beth Mickle about her collaboration with James Gunn, the rise of women in the art department, and what's in store for their next project, SupermanLegacy:

That is incredible. I can't wait to see what Metropolis looks like. You're no stranger to superhero movies, especially with James Gunn. Can you talk to me about the collaboration process working with James? Beth Mickle: Absolutely. It's been an honor and the biggest privilege of my career to be brought into this arena. But yes, five, six, seven years ago, you didn't see women production designing superhero movies, production designing giant tent-pole movies. And when I did Suicide Squad, I was the second woman in America to have done it.
I was happy to be doing it all, and just knowing that I was a small part of a team, and maybe the lower rung of a team, but just happy to be there. And I feel like that openness, that willingness really led to doors being open. And then also just making sure I stayed in touch with folks that I worked with and who I respected and admire and hoped would one day direct. And I was really lucky that a lot of those folks ended up in those position and were able to bring me along for the ride.
Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and 2 are very colorful, but can you talk to me about carrying over the aesthetic to make it consistent for the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3? And just seeing that and realizing how much those baby animal characters left a mark and really got to people's hearts, and to the point where they ended up putting them on t-shirts and making these beautiful pieces of art, it just shows how much it resonates with fans and how important it is that we do honor to these great stories, that people know, these characters, the cannon, and so that Superman fans, years from now, will be feeling like we did justice to this character and this world...
Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel are really space journeys in the corner of the Marvel universe, whereas Suicide Squad was really grounded in the world, whereas I feel like Superman is a blend of both. How do you balance that look?
