Why Guardians Of The Galaxy 4's Update Isn't Necessarily A Bad Thing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was the perfect ending to the original iteration of the team. The film saw Chris Pratt's Star-Lord name Rocket Raccoon the new captain of the Guardians of the Galaxy, then leaving the team, which most members also did. Rocket was then joined by Groot, Kraglin, Cosmo the Spacedog, Adam Warlock, and the young Phyla in the movie's post-credits scene.
While the new iteration of the cosmic team should continue to have a presence in the MCU, perhaps assisting Earth's Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, it is likely for the best that the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy be left standing as its own thing. The new Guardians of the Galaxy can appear in a renamed franchise, an MCU series, or play a supporting role in projects like the next two Avengers movies.
Gunn's writing and directing style can be felt all over the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and holiday special in the MCU. With the director leaving Marvel for DC, as well as multiple original cast members of the team seemingly leaving the MCU after the movie, it would be weird to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 without the crew that brought the first three to life.
