Every species of bird has a scent that is unique to them, evolutionary biologist Danielle Whittaker says. 🐦
There's much to admire about birds: They can soar through the skies, build durable nests and some can even sing. But can they smell?
She tested this hypothesis on incubating female juncos. She collected preen oil from a different bird species and placed it on the female juncos’ nests. The juncos left their nests quicker when a different bird species’ preen oil was present compared to when the preen oil from other junco was applied, she says.
Every species of bird has a distinct scent that is unique to them, she says, and the scents are made up of different compounds.
