The Google Pixel 8 series was launched earlier this week and its most noteworthy feature has got to be the promise of 7 years of software updates. This makes th
e Pixel 8 series overtake Samsung, which is offering 5 years of security updates to its flagship smartphones, something that the South Korean tech giant may be looking to remedy.
As shared by SamMobile which interviewed Shin-Chul Baik, the Principal Engineer and Technical Programme Manager of the Security Team for Samsung mobile eXperience division, the company is actively considering expanding support to more than 5 years. He further confirmed that the company is prepared to go beyond its current period of 5-year support, saying that it is in line with the company’s vision and the new regulations coming up.
However, doing so is a big challenge due to Samsung’s mass production of smartphones. For reference, more than 1 billion Samsung devices are updated monthly and over 10 billion annually, with over 150 models receiving security updates on its monthly, quarterly and bi-annual release schedules across the world’s markets.
So, what do you guys think of Samsung potentially expanding software support for its devices? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below and stay tuned to TechNave for more trending tech news.
