Rushdie is expected to be among the first witnesses to testify at the Chautauqua County Court in Mayville, New York, a short distance from the Chautauqua Institution where he was stabbed in August 2022.
Matar, 26, was seen in videos rushing the stage at the institution as Rushdie was being introduced to the audience for a talk on writers' safety. Rushdie, 77, was stabbed multiple times in the head, neck, torso, and left hand, sustaining severe injuries including blindness in his right eye and damage to his liver and intestines. Matar has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault.Rushdie has lived under the shadow of death threats since the 1988 publication of his novel 'The Satanic Verses.' He has faced numerous threats, including a fatwa issued by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then Iran's supreme leader, calling for the novelist's death. While the Iranian government declared in 1998 that it no longer supported the fatwa, Rushdie remained a target.
