Restaurants in Johor Baru face a yearly challenge finding enough part-time workers, especially during the busy Chinese New Year period.

For many restaurants in Johor Baru, the upcoming Chinese New Year brings a familiar challenge: finding enough part-time workers . Restaurant owner Phua Kai Hoo, who runs five eateries, said he's only able to hire about half the part-timers he needs. He attributes the difficulty to a lack of Malaysia ns willing to take on such roles. Phua noted a positive trend of more senior citizens taking up part-time work, which helps alleviate the shortage.

Lennox Cheok, who owns two restaurants, has opted not to hire part-time staff due to the challenges of finding them. He expressed a willingness to employ part-timers but highlighted the difficulty. John Ang, president of the Johor Cooks Association, said restaurant owners are offering salaries double the usual rate to attract workers. Despite this, he noted that finding extra workers for Chinese New Year or other festive seasons remains a persistent problem
