THE recantation of several suspects who turned witnesses in the assassination of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo will have an effect on the multiple murder and frustrated murder charges that the government will file against Negros Oriental Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr., Ferdinand Topacio, chief legal counsel of the lawmaker, said.

He issued the statement in reaction to reports that the alleged gunmen who are currently under the custody of authorities suddenly turned uncooperative. In general, Topacio said when the recantation is made after the hearing of a particular case and the witness, who has already been cross-examined, suddenly decided to change his statement, the court gives little bearing on this.

Topacio said he is not one of the lawyers of the self-confessed gunmen and that he only represents Teves.'I don't even represent the two sons of the congressman,' he Teves said, referring to Kurt Mathew and Axel who, along with their father, are also facing criminal complaints for violation of Republic Act 10591, otherwise known as the 'Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act,' and RA 9516 or the 'Law on Explosives.
