Liberal frontbencher Jane Hume said Philip Lowe was “eminently qualified” and had done a good job, in a sign the Coalition’s support for the governor has firmed.

Liberal frontbencher Jane Hume said it would be a “real shame” if Philip Lowe was not reappointed to lead the Reserve Bank, in a sign that the Coalition’s support for the embattled central bank governor had firmed.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers is set to announce this month whether Dr Lowe’s term will be extended or if a new governor will be named. In the most explicit comments to date from the opposition frontbench, Senator Hume said on Wednesday that Dr Lowe was “possibly one of the most qualified economists in the country”.“I think that there are very few people out there in Australia that will be as qualified to do this job as Philip Lowe,” she told ABC radio.Mr Dutton said the appointment was a matter for the government, while Mr Taylor repeatedly refused to answer whether Dr Lowe’s term should be extended.
