ARLINGTON — Someday, and that day seems to be coming sooner rather than later, Joey Gallo may be remembered with other Dallas-Fort Worth pro sports greats....

to replace injured infielder Josh Smith. Both players were acquired in the deal that sent Gallo to the New York Yankees last July. Duran immediately went into the lineup at third behind starter Glenn Otto, another return from the Gallo trade.

Perhaps it is premature to fully evaluate the deal. But at least on the surface: a steal. The former Ranger has struggled badly in New York, but the early returns for the Texas club have been promising. Especially considering the Rangers’ relative comfort with pushing Duran from Double-A to the majors when the need for an infielder presented itself.

“He’s got the ability to impact a baseball and hit a fastball. He’s a talented kid and we have a need for him right now. We need a little bit of impact with the bat. It just made sense, whether it is for a short stint or if he lights the world on fire and we make other moves to keep him.” Duran has surged more than the outfield options. After a hot April, Taveras has slumped. Solak and Calhoun were both demoted earlier this year after more than 900 MLB plate appearances apiece. And though Duran is younger than fellow infielder Davis Wendzel, one of the team’s two first-round picks in 2019 who is currently at Triple-A Round Rock, he was the choice.
