The group brings its brand of musical lunacy to Galveston Sunday.

Everybody loves cartoons. Joel Pierson has made a living out of it… sort of.

“It's such an important part of American culture and tradition,” says Pierson, “and it’s really great to be able to help continue the legacy of these characters.” Pierson also works with modern animators, although he admits he’s not always crazy about the music attached to their work. “When we find contemporary films, that’s a really big consideration,” he says. “I want to be able to say, ‘Oh, wow, this soundtrack is exceptional.’ Or I'll just write new music that fits the aesthetics of the band and also works with contemporary films.”

Copyrights to certain characters may have changed hands many times through the years, complicating what Pierson can and can’t use in the show. Still, he much prefers scouring YouTube and other sites for public-domain films to the alternative.
