BREAKING: Qantas has issued a mayday alert for a flight bound for Sydney from Auckland. 7NEWS
Just after 2pm on Wednesday, about an hour outside of Sydney, the pilot for flight QF144 from Auckland reported one of the twin engines had malfunctioned and was losing power.“The aircraft landed safely around 3.30pm and is now being inspected by our engineers.“While inflight engine shutdowns are rare, and would naturally be concerning for passengers, our pilots are trained to manage them safely and aircraft are designed to fly for an extended period on one engine.
Passengers told 7NEWS they heard some disruptions on the flight, however, they couldn’t tell what had caused it. The pilot had chosen not to tell passengers about the potential emergency until the last moment. 7NEWS understands emergency services rushed to the plane upon its landing before guiding it over to the terminal.
