The state government said it has delayed the price hike to help ease cost-of-living pressures.

Penrith to the CBD will increase from $7.24 to $7.65There will be no changes to the weekly travel cap, however half-price trips after eight journeys will stop when the change comes into effect.According to the state government, almost 90 per cent of passengers don’t reach the cap.

Instead, Friday fares will be made cheaper, with passengers to receive a 30 per cent discount on Metro, train, bus and light rail services. Adult commuters will be able to travel all day for a maximum cost of $8.90 while children, youth and concession fares will be capped at $4.45. The NSW government said it has ”worked to relieve cost-of-commuting pressures” by delaying the increases — which usually kick in at the start of each financial year — and by ensuring they were less than the more recent Sydney Consumer price index movement.

“Every weekend will soon be a long weekend when it comes to Opal fares, as we make Friday travel cheaper for everyone — trimming the cost of visiting the city be it for work, to shop or to enjoy a day and night out on the town,” NSW Transport Minister Jo Haylen said.

Nationally deaths on roads have had a major increase, going up by seven per cent to 721 from the beginning of January to the end of July. “We have seen a considerable jump in 2023, 250 deaths in New South Wales alone. “The 12-month rolling period is well over 1,200 deaths, so not good news anywhere. “Particularly bad in New South Wales where we are working so hard to see the road toll reduced.”
