Proton's e.MAS 7 takes the crown as Malaysia's top-selling electric vehicle for January 2025, outperforming rivals and signaling a strong shift towards sustainable transportation.
The Proton e.MAS 7 has claimed the title of Malaysia 's most popular electric vehicle (EV) for January 2025, demonstrating the continuous growth of the EV market while traditional petrol and diesel vehicles experience a decline. According to data released by the Road Transport Department (JPJ), one in four EVs registered last month was an e.MAS 7, outpacing top contenders from brands like BYD. This surge in EV popularity is evident when comparing January 2024 and January 2025 registrations.
While total vehicle registrations in Malaysia showed an increase, petrol vehicle registrations plummeted by 23.7% (from 61,753 units in January 2024 to 47,093 in January 2025), and green diesel registrations dropped by a significant 44.3% (from 2,525 units to 4,533 units). Conversely, petrol hybrids witnessed a modest 7% growth (from 2,101 units to 2,249 units).Proton's debut EV, the e.MAS 7, emerged as the most sought-after EV model last month with a remarkable 421 units registered. The top 10 EV models were rounded out by the Tesla Model Y at #2, the BYD Atto 3 at #4, the BMW i5 at #5, the BYD Seal at #6, and a tie between the Xpeng G6 and Zeekr 007 at #7. The GWM Ora Good Cat and 07 (combined in JPJ's data) secured the #9 spot with 43 units, followed closely by the MG4 at #10 with 41 units. Other notable entries in the top 30 included the Leapmotor C10 at #13 with 30 units and the Zeekr X at #17 with 20 units. This trend highlights the growing preference for EVs in Malaysia, particularly among consumers looking for value for money. The Proton e.MAS 7, priced under RM120,000, is lauded for its spacious interior and impressive performance, making it a strong contender in the C-segment SUV market. This affordability, coupled with government incentives and increasing charging infrastructure, is driving the adoption of EVs across all segments. The success of the Proton e.MAS 7 also underscores the potential of Malaysian car manufacturers to compete in the global EV market.
