Hundreds of LGBTQI activists and child sex abuse survivors congregated for a planned protest in Hyde Park, as George Pell's funeral took place across the road at St Mary's Cathedral.
One mourner outside the cathedral shouted abuse and confronted protesters before he was moved on by police.
"George Pell was a man who spent his entire life, his considerable wealth, his connections, his power in the Catholic Church to defend the powerful, the strong and the unjust against the oppressed, the vulnerable and the defenceless," one speaker said. "We have a right and responsibility to come out and say no, we reject Pell and everything he stood for.
But following negotiations, police backed away from the dispute and protesters were given the go ahead to swarm the funeral on a modified route.
