George Pell, Australia's most senior catholic clergy man, was farewelled by former prime ministers, politicians and high-profile figures at a requiem mass on Thursday.
Cardinal George Pell has been remembered for his"invaluable contribution to the Catholic Church" at a funeral service at Sydney's St Mary's Cathedral.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were former Liberal prime ministers John Howard and Tony Abbott, as well as Opposition leader Peter Dutton. Archbishop of Sydney Anthony Bishop led the funeral mass, saying Pell was a"giant of the Catholic Church" who was both"loved and hated". Mr Abbott took to the podium to deliver his eulogy for Pell, describing him as “a thinker, a leader, a Christian warrior and a proud Australian”.“He never fell for the modern conceit that he was bigger than what had shaped him; faith, church and country.”
“Not to succumb to anger, self-pity or despair when almost any other human would. And instead to have accepted this modern-day crucifixion, walking humbly in the footsteps of our lord, that’s the heroic virtue that makes him to my mind a saint for our times.”"He believed in the rule of law, a fair go for all, and in Aussie rules parlance, he played the ball and not the man," he said.
