Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib claimed that Datuk Seri Najib Razak used fugitive businessman Jho Low as an intermediary to receive funds from 1MDB, despite numerous warnings about Jho Low's character. He argued that Najib protected Jho Low and used him to maintain good relations with Middle Eastern countries. Najib, testifying as the first defense witness, denied the allegations, stating he did not protect Jho Low but leveraged him for diplomatic purposes.

He said among the warnings given to Najib about Jho Low was by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, who described Jho Low as an “unsavoury character”. However, Najib, who is testifying as the first defence witness over allegations of misappropriation of RM2.3bil of 1MDB funds, denied all the allegations.
Najib also refuted Ahmad Akram’s suggestion that Jho Low was excluded from any official role in 1MDB to allow the former premier to shift the blame to Jho Low if authorities questioned the flow of funds within the company.I also put it to you, Datuk Seri, that you used your position to receive bribes and every decision you made is for personal benefit, not the government.
