California park officials are keeping a watchful eye on the latest round of atmospheric river storms making their away across the deluged state, specifically as warmer precipitation meets a heavy snowpack and unstable ground.
Tuesday that they expect"major potential flooding, landslides, serious road damage, and other impacts, both in the parks and the surrounding communities" as rain falls on the dense Sierra Nevada snow and the 2021 KNP Complex Fire burn scar in Tulare County.
"The predicted storm could have significant impacts, particularly on roadways damaged by previous storms," Ned Kelleher, incident commander for the parks’ storm response team, ."While we appreciate the desire to get out into the parks, we urge you to prioritize your safety in the coming days. We will work diligently to restore access as soon as we can responsibly do so."Farther north, more snow is expected, but possible rain has park officials on alert.
"That could cause some issues," Lassen Volcanic National Park spokesperson Kevin Sweeney said on the possibility of rain in the massive Dixie Fire burn scar. The fire, which covered almost 1 million acres across five California counties in 2021, burnedEarlier this month, an unstable portion of the sidewalk at popular. The site sits along the 30-mile Lassen Volcanic National Park Highway — which is closed to vehicles in the winter — and is heavily trafficked in the warmer months.
