The interim superintendent struggles to balance tending to grief and moving the district forward.

UCISD interim Superintendent Gary Patterson visits Eliahna “Ellie” Garcia’s ofrenda set up beside her gravesite for a Día de los Muertos gathering at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery on Nov. 2.Gary Patterson, the interim superintendent of Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District, is getting paid $1,000 for each day he works. He deserves every dollar, possibly more.

Since then, he’s worked about a half dozen jobs as an interim superintendent, including leading D’Hanis ISD, near Uvalde, during the COVID pandemic and La Vernia High School after its appalling hazing sex abuse scandal in 2017. Has the man helming the school district now known as being the site of the second-worst school shooting in American history made mistakes? Maybe. Does he have good intentions? Clearly.

He’s trying to piece together a school district at the center of a decimated community. Challenges abound. Some, like inadequate funding, have always existed, but have been exacerbated after the massacre. Despite millions of donations and funding funneled into Uvalde, the vast majority of these funds have not gone to school operations.
