A Dallas law firm is representing the ex-Uvalde ISD police chief in lawsuits filed by families of May 24 mass shooting victims.

Dallas law firm Fanning, Harper, Martinson, Brandt and Kutchin filed paperwork in at least one federal lawsuit this week saying it represents Arredondo, who wasInterim Superintendent Gary Patterson said during a meeting Thursday with the San Antonio Express-News editorial board that Arredondo’s legal bills are not being paid by the district.Thomas Brandt, one of Arredondo’s lawyers, said the district’s insurance company hired his firm.
His law firm is filing paperwork denying all claims that Arredondo was liable for the deaths or injuries to the victims, 19 students and two teachers, and survivors. Arredondo was fired for misjudging the situation and concluding that the gunman wasn’t an active shooter but rather a barricaded suspect, which calls for a careful, methodical police response. Police doctrine on active shooters calls for officers to confront the gunman and “stop the killing” immediately, regardless of the risk to police.
