Two separate fatal auto-pedestrian collisions early Friday, including one involving a police officer, a little more than a mile apart had both sides of Interstate 10 on the east side of town closed for hours while investigators examined the scene, officials said. The first crash happened around 2 a.m., Ernest Garcia, assistant chief for the Houston Police Department, told On Scene reporters.
A Houston police officer had been traveling west on Interstate 10, near Lathrop Street, when he felt a hard bump that deployed his vehicle’s airbags, Garcia said.Emergency responders pronounced the man, likely in his 30s, dead at the scene.About an hour after that, officers received a call around 3:02 a.m. about a fatal auto-pedestrian crash in the 8600 block of the interstate, on the westbound side.Police estimated the two investigations could have the freeway closed for hours early Friday.
