Houston Police Chief Troy Finner, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña urged residents to celebrate the New Years holiday safely at a Thursday afternoon news conference. Finner said last New Year's Eve, Houston emergency responders answered 392 calls about gunfire and nine people were arrested. Discharging firearms is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine. Turner said discharging firearms into the air is dangerous and pulls police from other important calls. “Engaging in this dangerous behavior puts our neighborhoods, especially our children, at risk for a potentially tragic situation,” he said.Fireworks are illegal within the City of Houston. Possessing or using fireworks within city limits could carry a $500 - $2000 penalty for each individual firework, according to the city website, which notes that no warnings are given.
