A plane crash in Kazakhstan last week has highlighted the importance of seat location in aircraft survivability. An analysis of a 2012 experiment involving a controlled crash of a Boeing 727 model plane sheds light on the factors influencing passenger survival.

Last Wednesday (December 25), the world was shocked by the plane crash in Kazakhstan as people around the globe were celebrating Christmas. The Azerbaijan Airlines aircraft J2-8243, an Embraer 190 carrying 69 passengers including five crew members, was reported to be attempting an emergency landing near the city of Aktau before crashing, killing 38 passengers, while 29 others survived.

From several images and videos circulating after the accident and shared on social media, it can be seen that most of the surviving passengers were in the back seats or tail of the plane. The incident serves as a reminder of an experiment conducted 12 years ago by a group of scientists, aviation safety experts, and elite pilots. According to The Economic Times, on April 27, 2012, a Boeing 727 model aircraft took off from Mexicali, Mexico, piloted by Captain Jim Bob Slocum. Captain Slocum flew the aircraft to the crash zone, a desert area in the country, before he then jumped out using a parachute. The aircraft, filled with crash test dummies, scientific instruments, and cameras, was then remotely controlled to the designated location. A few minutes later, the aircraft hit the ground at a speed of 255km/h (140mph) causing the fuselage to break into several parts. This intentional crash allowed researchers to analyze how seat location affected the passengers' chances of survival. The study showed that the chances of survival for passengers in an accident depended entirely on the location of their seat in the aircraft.
