An Azerbaijan Airlines flight crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan, killing 38 passengers. The cause of the crash is under investigation, but reports suggest a possible bird strike.
The world was celebrating Christmas when news broke of a plane crash in Kazakhstan yesterday (December 25th). The Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243, carrying 69 passengers including five crew members, was reportedly attempting an emergency landing near the city of Aktau before crashing. The aircraft, traveling from Baku, Azerbaijan to Grozny, Russia, was reportedly changing course due to fog.
According to reports from BBC, Kazakh authorities stated that 38 passengers were killed in the incident. In addition, Kazakhstan's Emergency Ministry initially reported 25 passengers survived, but the number increased to 28 as search and rescue operations continued. All of them have been taken to hospitals for treatment. Through videos circulating on social media, it can be seen that the aircraft plunged downwards in a landing position before exploding upon impact. According to the airline, the plane “made an emergency landing” about 3 kilometers from Aktau city. Data from the flight tracking website, Flightradar24, shows that the involved aircraft took off at 3:55 GMT yesterday and crashed around 6:28 GMT, according to BBC. Meanwhile, unofficial reports by Russian media suggest the aircraft may have collided with a flock of birds before crashing. Consequently, Azerbaijan Airlines said that flights between Baku and Grozny and Makhachkala in Russia will be canceled pending the completion of the investigation. Authorities have reported that they have recovered the black box from the aircraft
