Penang's tourism sector is experiencing a surge, particularly from China, with the recent launch of a direct flight from Xi'an. This new route strengthens Penang's position as a popular destination for both leisure and business travelers.
Penang ’s tourism sector is thriving, with China remaining one of its top international visitor sources in 2024. State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said by last month, the state recorded a 222.7% increase in Chinese tourist arrivals via international flights, reaching 108,029 compared to 33,474 during the same period in 2023. The total figure is likely to be even higher when accounting for visitors transiting through Kuala Lumpur or entering by land.
The latest milestone in this upward trend is the launch of Loong Air’s direct flight from Xi’an to Penang, which landed its inaugural flight on Monday (Dec 30). Wong said that he welcomes the new route, highlighting its importance in fostering cultural exchange, economic collaboration, and tourism growth between Xi’an and Penang. Xi’an is now the seventh Chinese city with a direct connection to Penang, joining a robust network that includes Xiamen, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Chongqing. This new route enhances accessibility for travellers from Northwest China, strengthening Penang’s position as a top destination for both leisure and business. Wong added that Penang’s international aviation network has seen remarkable growth, now boasting direct connections to 20 global cities through 35 routes. Direct flight frequencies from China alone surged from 17 weekly flights in November 2023 to 61 in the same period this year, a remarkable 259% increase. As Penang gears up for the Lunar New Year, I extend an invitation to travellers from China to experience the island’s vibrant festivities.
