The former Trump campaign chairman is set to be sentenced for tax and bank fraud.

By Rachel Weiner Rachel Weiner Local reporter covering federal court in Alexandria, Va. and local court in Arlington and Alexandria. Email Bio Follow March 7 at 9:00 AM Paul Manafort, the highflying international lobbyist who had his name stitched into his exotic leather jackets and an ‘M’ spelled out in flowers at one of his six homes, will learn Thursday whether many of his remaining years are likely to be spent in prison.

Sentencing guidelines call for a prison term of 19½ to 24 years for Manafort in his Virginia case. He was found guilty at trial of eight charges. While a jury deadlocked on 10 others, Manafort has since admitted culpability as part of his guilty plea in D.C. court. It’s the same line he used to successfully rebranded the corrupt Ukrainian strongman Viktor Yanukovych as a democratic reformer and steer him to that country’s presidency in 2010. Manafort called it the “most satisfying” campaign of a career that included helping elect four American presidents.

But he argues he would have paid those banks back if not for the special counsel, which froze his cash and left him in default.Prosecutors have pushed back, noting that Manafort had already been sued for failing to keep up with a $3.9 million loan before the indictment. “Unable to establish that Mr. Manafort engaged in any such collusion, the Special Counsel charged him . . . with crimes . . . unrelated to the 2016 campaign or any collusion with the Russian government,” defense attorneys wrote in a memo to the court.
