OPINION: Grief is everywhere, but so too determination. Special correspondent Misha Zelinsky shares insights from his time in Ukraine in a final dispatch.
| After 500 days of Russia’s brutal invasion, the scars inside Ukraine are everywhere, but so too is stoicism.
Despite such strength, the grief is palpable. The Kyiv Institute of Sociology says 78 per cent of Ukrainians know a family member or friend killed or injured during Russia’s invasion. This was the scene of Ukraine’s revolution in 2014, which triggered Russia’s initial invasion of Crimea, the eastern Donbas region and everything since. Today, it represents the price of resistance. In drizzling rain, a girl holds a flag. Scribbled atop a fallen soldier’s name, is the word “Papa”. She places the flag into the grass, before tearfully running back into her mother’s arms. The family embraces silently. Nearby, another mourner plants yet another flag.
Still, Ukraine is pressing forward, inch by inch. Ukrainian insiders say they’ve accepted a slower advance that will gain momentum as Russian body bags pile up. The breakthrough is coming, they say. But how quickly?
