Rising star Mollie O’Callaghan won an extraordinary 200m freestyle final in Japan, while Sam Short broke Grant Hackett’s Australian record in the 800m freestyle.
On Wednesday evening in Japan, the 19-year-old broke the longest-standing female swimming world record - the 200m freestyle - and beat the reigning Olympic champion; her training partner Ariarne Titmus.“Very stressed. I’m still recovering and doing rehab,” O’Callaghan told this masthead after touching the wall in a time of 1:52.85, almost a second faster than she’d ever swum.
Sam Short broke Grant Hackett’s Australian record in the men’s 800m freestyle to pick up a silver medal before Australia’s mixed medley team came within half a second of another gold medal on another confidence-boosting evening for the Dolphins. “Dean is an amazing coach. He trains me for this. I can’t share any of his secrets,” O’Callaghan said.
