A regional town’s deputy fire captain has revealed a worsening health care issue growing in NSW.
Deputy Fire Captain Jason Hextell from the South Coast town of Narooma shed light on the worsening situation in some regions across the state, telling SkyNews.com.au of a recent incident that left him appalled.
When DC Hextell’s crew arrived at the scene shortly after being requested for the assist, they were shocked to find no ambulance had arrived, despite there being an ambulance station in Narooma.“I went back out to our truck and spoke to fire comms about the ETA, and I get told an hour and 20 minutes.”Firefighters from Narooma Fire Station don’t have the appropriate training to properly assist in medical incidents, so the crew were forced to wait for the ambulance to arrive.
Survivability of structural fires – such as house fires – is also heavily dependent on the response time from firefighters, leaving small towns at a higher risk if FRNSW is busy attending to medical incidents. Narooma operates within NSW Ambulance’s Southern NSW Zone, which stretches from West Wyalong in the state’s west to Batemans Bay at the coast and goes as far south as the Victorian border.
In the South Coast statistical area, the median time for ambulances to reach emergency cases was 14.4 minutes, according to data from the Bureau of Health Information.
