SIBU: Sarawak needs more nurses especially in acute and specialised care as well as in rural clinics, says Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The Deputy Chief Minister said that the ratio of nurses to the state’s population of 2,907,500 in 2020 was still low with only three nurses to 1,000 people.

“I hope that the Health Ministry can consider more senior posts in Sarawak so that they will be able to stay in their hometown and serve in the state," said Dr Sim, whose speech was read by Bukit Assek assemblyman, Joseph Chieng. He said the intake and training for community nurses had stopped since 2015 and that the upgrading of such posts to staff nurse has also been delayed.
