abc.net.au/news/nsw-weather-humidity-lifts-temperatures-unbearable-levels/101907308New South Wales is currently sweating through a spell of oppressively high humidity, bringing the warmest nights in years and "feels like" temperatures as much as five degrees above the air temperature.Light winds at night and the effect of latent heat are behind the muggy overnight conditions
Sydney's Sunday minimum of 24C was the city's warmest night in three years, while Merimbula on the ordinarily cooler south coast, sweated through their warmest night on record at 23.2C, with more than 50 years of weather data at the town. This phase change from a gas to a liquid releases heat into the air and counters the natural diurnal drop in temperature. What is currently making nights even more uncomfortable, is it feels even hotter than the actual temperature suggests due to a combination of high humidity and light winds.
During periods of light winds and high humidity, the apparent temperature is warmer than the air temperature, while in strong winds and low humidity the apparent temperature is cooler than the air temperature.Apparent temperature causes state to sweat Sydney at 9am was cooler than Perth at 25.0C, but felt like 28.4C in 91 per cent humidity and 11 km/h winds.
A warm tropical air mass descended over south-east states last week and has lingered over NSW for an extended period.
