A stunning Northern Lights display could be visible around parts of the country on New Year’s Eve, but cloud cover could ruin the celestial exhibit. Ireland was graced with a series of spectacular aurora borealis shows over the year, and while the phenomena is usually only visible here between May and August, we will be treated to another display to ring in the New Year.
Now, prediction models are showing it might well appear over half of the country on New Year’s Eve due to major flare activity on the sun on Tuesday. Aurora Alerts Ireland has said that this means there is a potential for a 'strong aurora' as we move into the New Year, with experts saying the event should be visible from 6pm until around 3am. Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather confirmed that the Northern Lights would be visible over our skies, but added that cloud cover could hamper the efforts of any prospective sky watchers to catch the stunning display. A series of weather warnings have been put in place by Met Éireann, with both Cork and Kerry set to be battered by heavy rain, while the rest of the country is hit with scattered showers and strong winds over the day. Alan said: “Few people asking me about the Northern Lights, and yes the good news is there were two CME’s directed towards Earth, which means there could be a display of Northern Lights Tuesday night, but the problem is…. a lot of cloud forecast. “Might get a few breaks in the North, could get lucky, but elsewhere probably going to be spoiled by cloud. But the rain should clear off at least earlier on New Year’s Day. “Once we get through the wet and windy day on Tuesday, the rain will clear Wednesday New Year’s Day and a nice bit of sunny spells to start the New Yea
