New weather charts suggest heavy snowfall across parts of Ireland, particularly in the west, for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. While long-range forecasts are uncertain, meteorologists indicate a trend towards cooler weather and possible snow events in early January.

New weather charts published on Christmas Eve show the potential for heavy snowfall across parts of Ireland on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. The new maps shared by WXCharts.com on Tuesday morning predict snowfall as far south as Co. Cork and as far north as Co. Donegal on the afternoon of New Year's Eve . The heaviest snowfall, according to WXCharts.

com, looks to be confined to the west of the country in counties Galway, Mayo, Sligo and Donegal however conditions look set to worsen on New Year's Day and January 2. The new maps also show parts of Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal and all of the North of Ireland covered in snow on Thursday January 2, 2025 however it's unclear how long it will last. Long range weather forecasts are notoriously difficult to predict and while Met Eireann hasn't explicitly forecast snow for the New Year it does however concede that 'current indications suggest conditions will turn more unsettled this week'. Met Eireann also says, for the six days from Monday December 30 to Sunday January 5, 'rainfall amounts signalling slightly above average over much of the country'. Reinforcing the uncertainty surrounding the New Year's Day forecast, Irish weather expert and the person behind Carlow Weather on X, formerly Twitter, Alan O'Reilly said: 'While weather models do show an increasing trend of cooler air for start of January the details are far from clear and a cool spell could be short lived blast or possibly start of a few rounds of cold spells. NAO and AO both possibly going negative increases chances of cold.' Meanwhile, Christmas Day across Ireland is set to be a mild affair with top temperatures expected to range between 11 and 13 degree
