North Korea is deeply opposed to the annual military drills involving the US and South Korea, which it considers practice runs for an invasion.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has observed the test-firing of strategic cruise missiles from a navy ship, state media reported on Monday, as the US and South Korean militaries kicked off major annual drills that the North views as an invasion rehearsal.

KCNA said the missiles hit designated targets without any errors, demonstrating the ship’s readiness and attack capability. It said South Korea’s military will maintain a firm readiness based on its capacity that can overwhelmingly defeat potential North Korean provocations. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspects the Guards 2nd Surface Ship Flotilla of the East Sea Fleet of the Navy of the Korean People’s Army.Since the start of 2022, North Korea performed more than 100 weapons tests, some of them involving nuclear-capable ballistic missiles designed to strike the US mainland and its allies South Korea and Japan. The US and South Korea have expanded their regular training exercises in response.
